Five Tips For Natural Eyelash Growth
1.) Double Cleanse
Double Cleansing is a popular skincare method from Korea where you cleanse first with an oil-based cleanser and then follow up with a water-based cleanser.
The reason why the method has become so popular is that it ensures that the skin is properly cleaned and that no makeup, sunscreen, or debris is left behind.
There are two reasons why double cleansing is so important for eyelash growth:
1.) Oil-based cleansing removes makeup without tugging the lashes. This prevents breakage and damage during the cleansing process.
Other cleaning methods such as makeup wipes, are rough on the lashes and require force and tugging to remove makeup. Oil-based cleansers are made of natural oils that glide off makeup with ease.
2.) The second cleanse with a water-based face wash ensures that absolutley no mascara, glue, or eye makeup worn is left on the eye.
What Cleansers Do You Recommend?
Here is the clean beauty, antioxidant-infused, double cleansing method I am currently obsessed with.
First oil cleanse with Biossance’s Elderberry + Squalane Jelly Cleanser and then water-cleanse with Glow Recipe’s Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser.
Your skin (and lashes!) will love this combination!
2.) Ditch Your Eyelash Curler
One of the most important tips for how to grow longer eyelashes is to limit the use of an eyelash curler.
Have you ever curled your lashes and seen a few of your beautiful lashes fall out in the process?
Eyelash curlers can be very damaging to natural eyelashes if not used correctly. They also require daily cleaning with alcohol to keep them sanitary. Eyelash curlers are used on the eye, after all. It is important to make sure you are keeping your curler as clean as possible.
I personally do not have time to put that much thought into something that is not helping my overall lash health, so I chose to avoid lash curlers.
To make up for not curling my lashes I purchase mascaras focused on lift.
My absolute favorite for this is Benefit’s Roller Lash. The funny thing about this product is that its packaging has a picture of an eyelash curler with an X over it. I guess they knew what they were doing. 😉
I also love Loreal Telescopic as a great drugstore option that lifts the lashes to the heavens!
On no makeup days:
I like to use my index fingers to gently give my lashes a natural lift. With clean hands, I simply press upwards on my lashes holding for 5-10 seconds. This gives the same effect as a curler without the risk of breakage!
3.) Apply Castor Oil Nightly
While there is no medical evidence to prove that castor oil can grow lashes, I saw major results after a month of consistent use. I wish I had a before and after picture to show but unfortunately do not.
While castor oil may not make your eyelashes miraculously grow, I like to think of the nightly application as a nourishing hair mask that helps to prevent breakage while I sleep (I need all the help I can get because I sleep face down on the pillow).😂
It is important to patch test castor oil on your arm or neck to make sure your skin is not allergic before applying so close to your eye.
How To Apply Castor Oil:
I apply a small amount of castor oil to my lashes using my index finger (after washing my hands, of course). You could also use a clean Q-tip or spoolie for the application. I always make sure to remove the remaining oil the next morning when washing my face.
My Pick For Castor Oil:
I have always used the brand Cligantic for organic castor oil. They recently came out with this genius eyelash kit. It includes a bottle of castor oil, funnel, eyelash applicator, and waterline applicator for the easiest application. For only $8.99 this is an amazing way to get started with castor oil. Bonus Tip: I love to apply castor oil as a nightly cuticle treatment to make the product multi-purpose. This works very well to maintain my manicures.
4.) Nutrition For Eyelash Growth
For any beauty goal, a nutrient-dense diet is essential. In the case of hair growth, protein is important. Studies show a link between diets lacking in protein to hair loss. (1) Research has also found that diets rich in the proper nutrients can promote hair growth (when hair loss is due to a poor diet).
Hair is made mostly of the protein keratin which the body relies on biotin to produce. While biotin deficiencies are very rare, there are still some great foods you can add to your diet to promote hair growth rather than a supplement.
Here are five of the best foods to eat consistently for optimal hair growth:
- Eggs: Amazing for healthy hair, as eggs are rich in biotin, protein, zinc, and selenium. (2)
- Avocados, Nuts, and Seeds: All are rich in healthy fats.
- Sweet Potatoes: Rich in Vitamin A, which is necessary for hair growth.
- Berries: For collagen production.
- Dark Leafy Greens: A great plant-based source of iron.

5.) Never Sleep With Eye Makeup On
This tip may sound obvious, but it is extremely important to mention in regard to eyelash health. We have all fallen asleep with our makeup on once before. I have noticed that much more damage is done to my eyelashes than to my skin.
Here is why:
Think about it… when you have mascara on your eyelashes become extremely stiff. If you fall asleep face down on the pillow with makeup on, the eyelashes cannot bend so they break. Tragic!
Also, sleeping in eye makeup can lead to infections and styes. Nobody wants that.
So take this as another reminder to not commit the cardinal beauty sin of sleeping with makeup to protect your eyelashes from breakage and your eyes from unnecessary risk of infection.
That concludes my five tips for natural eyelash growth! I hope you found these tips helpful and have a better understanding of how to grow longer eyelashes naturally.
