Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean harsh chemicals. Learn all of the best non-toxic cleaning tips and tricks for a healthier home here.
Who needs harsh cleaning chemicals, when natural compounds can be just as effective in cleaning your home?
Store brought sprays and cleaners not only contain harmful chemicals and toxins but are also dreadful for the environment when they end up in your waste. Don’t worry, saying no to these cleaning products does not mean that you have to survive in a dirty home.
We are here to tell you some handy, non-toxic cleaning methods that will leave your home spotless and save you some $$ too!
1. Use baking soda to clean stains from plastics
Be it cups, containers, or plastic surfaces, you can use baking soda to clean them and make them good as new. Simply make a paste of baking soda and water and rub it on those nasty stains on your Tupperware. Let it sit for about an hour and then thoroughly clean it with water.
2. Unclog your drains with baking soda and white vinegar
Clogged drains are the bane of our existence. But don’t worry, with this handy hack, you can unclog them in just a few minutes. First, add a generous amount of baking soda to the clogged drain (about half a cup should be enough). Then add an equal amount of vinegar. Wait about three to five minutes before adding a little hot water. The baking soda and vinegar will react quickly to unclog your drain but feel free to repeat these steps if the drain still remains clogged.
3. Make your home smell delicious with this natural air freshener
Store brought air fresheners can contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, and picric acid. These chemicals not only contribute to secondary air pollution but are also associated with migraines, asthma, and breathing difficulties. So, ditch the artificial chemicals and opt for a natural alternative. Simmer some cinnamon in a pot of boiling water and add a few drops of vanilla essence to have your house smell cozy and sweet.
4. Use Dawn for everything (literally everything)
Dawn is an effective all-purpose cleaner and can be used so many different ways in your home. Did you know adding dawn into your laundry is an amazing hack for keeping your whites bright? Dawn can also be mixed with water in a spray bottle and used everywhere from countertops to the bathtub for effective cleaning.
5. Try this DIY all-purpose cleaner
If you want a multipurpose DIY cleaner that cleans surfaces well, all you need is baking soda and some water. Add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda to a quart of water, pour it into a spray bottle and you will have a multipurpose solution that removes most stains.
6. Try this DIY disinfectant
Disinfecting surfaces is as important as cleaning them. To make a simple, yet effective disinfectant, add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to 2 tablespoons of borax and add 3 cups of warm water. Shake well before use and it’s ready to kill those germs!
